It is official the month of Halloween – my favorite time of year. To celebrate, I wanted to provide a bunch of different romance reads that give me Halloween vibes for all types of romance readers. This will primarily be a round up based on vibes alone – giving me witchy, paranormal, dark and creepy, etc. types of vibes.
To best separate the various sub-genres that I was rounding up, I decided to split this in to a three (3) part post to best separate all of the things. Today’s post is going to focus on paranormal romances giving me these vibes.
Below are six paranormal romance recommendations that give me Halloween vibes.
Book 1: This Spells Disaster by Tori Anne Martin (released 9/12/2023)
A witchy sapphic paranormal romance novel where a witch fears the feelings between her and her crush were because of an accidental love potion. Add in fake dating with real feelings and this sounds like such a fun witchy romance. This one is on my radar to pick up; it has so many of my favorite things: witches, fake dating, plus it’s sapphic!
StoryGraph reader identified content warnings currently only lists classism as a content warning.
Book 2: My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine (released 8/29/2023)
The author’s debut rom-com following an artist who, on the brink of eviction, finds a room to rent for an unbeatable price. After moving in, she notices that her roommate is a night owl, but their limited interactions leave her heart melting. Until one day, she finds bags of blood in the fridge. He’s a vampire with a proposition. Another one that’s on my TBR (to be read) and sounds like a fun time.
Some reader identified content warnings from StoryGraph include, sexual content, blood, confinement, cursing, kidnapping.
Book 3: The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna (released 8/23/2022)
A cozy romance about an isolated witch who decides it’s time to embrace her new family and love interest. Mika, the witch, has grown up in isolation and founds herself at Nowhere House teaching young witches how to control their magic. The prickly librarian would do anything to protect this young witches and Mika is an irritatingly appealing threat. This sounds like it has found family and unlikely pairings. I currently have this out from the library and am SO excited to pick this up!
Readers on StoryGraph have identified a lot of content warnings, so please review further. The author has shared the following content warnings on their website: cursing, on-page sex discussions of trauma and past abuse, references to experiences of racism and homophobia.
If you are participating in the 23 for 23 initiative, this book would be a good one to read!
Book 4: Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross (released 1/14/2020)
The first book in the Stay a Spell series following a witch and a werewolf. Mateo thinks he is cursed and unable to shift into his wolf form. Evie’s a witch and one of her covens rules is “no werewolves”. One night Mateo stumbles into her bar asking for help and his wolf wants only Evie. This is one of the books on this list that I’ve actually read, though have not read the rest of the series. I ended up loving this book and need to pick up the others in the series following Evie’s sisters.
This book is available in Kindle Unlimited. Content warnings include: sexual content confinement, violence, blood, kidnapping, cursing, gaslighting, among others. Please be sure to check out content warnings to ensure a book is for you.
Book 5: Kiss and Spell by Celestine Martin (released 9/26/2023)
A paranormal romance between a witch and a Fae prince. Ursula is currently a fortune teller and wants to shake up her life. Prince Xavier, prince to the Fae Realm, is cursed and needs her help. How do you break a curse? By finding the perfect, curse-breaking kiss before Midsummer. This book sounds like a fun combination of of tropes and I cannot wait to try this one!
This is another book that fits for the 23 for 23 initiative. Limited content warnings are currently available. Infidelity is the main noted content warning at this time.
Book 6: Guild Hunter and Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Signh
I would be remiss if I didn’t include Nalini Singh on a list talking about paranormal romance. Nalini currently has two (2) ongoing paranormal series that give you ample books to read. All books have a fated mates trope, which works so well for these series. Each couple has their own story, but advances the macro plot forward at the same time.
Guild Hunter (first book: Angel’s Blood) follows a whole cast of characters, starting with Elena and Raphael. This is a series you will need to read in order. While my favorites, so far, are the books centering relationships that are not Elena and Raphael, I’ve grown to love their relationship. Each book pushes the macro plot forward in a lot of ways and I’m excited to see where Nalini takes this series. I’m prepared for a tragic series ending, and am always afraid for some of my favorite characters.
I am currently on book 15 in this series. The audiobooks are narrated by Justine Eyre and are INCREDIBLE. A great way to immerse yourself in this series. Book 16 will come out in 2024.
Psy-Changling (first book: Slave to Sensation) is the series I hear a lot more about (and I’m not sure I didn’t start with this one). Books in this series will follow a combination of different types of beings. A Psy has various mental abilities. Changelings sound like shifters that have both a human and animal form. And finally, humans. I honestly don’t have any idea what the overarching series is about; only that everyone who loves Nalini’s books absolutely rave about this series. I am so excited to give this a try and get sucked into the world that Nalini has built.
